A local driver found the corner of Marine Parade and Rangiuru Road too much for him about 5.50am on May 10.
He was driving a Subaru and travelling at high speed south on Marine Parade, but failed to negotiate the sharp bend on the corner. He lost control and crashed through a residential property.
The driver fled the scene but was arrested by police a short time later.
A 22-year-old Ōtaki man has been charged with driving with excess breath alcohol, driving while suspended, careless driving, and failing to stop and ascertain injury. No one was injured in the crash.
